Circa Spring-Summer 2014
Military Conflict and Occupation. The airfield ceased all civilian operations with the beginning of the War in Donbas in April 2014. The territory, including the airfield, was seized by Russian-backed separatist forces of the self-proclaimed 'Luhansk People's Republic' (LPR), making any non-military aviation impossible. The entire region became a conflict zone, and civilian infrastructure like airfields was either abandoned or repurposed for military use.
Derelict and located within a militarized zone under Russian occupation. Satellite imagery shows the unpaved grass/dirt runway is still identifiable but appears overgrown and is not maintained for aviation purposes. Since 2014, the site and the surrounding area have been under the control of Russian and proxy forces. There have been reports and indications that the area has been used as a military training ground. The airfield is completely non-operational for any civilian or formal aviation activity.
Gostra Mogila was a classic Soviet-era sports and general aviation airfield. Its primary role was as a base for the regional DOSAAF (Voluntary Society for Assistance to the Army, Air Force, and Navy) club of Voroshilovgrad (the Soviet name for Luhansk). It handled operations such as:
- Primary flight training on propeller aircraft like the Yakovlev Yak-52.
- Parachute jump training, with drops conducted from Antonov An-2 biplanes.
- Glider and aerotow activities.
- General aviation for local enthusiasts.
After the dissolution of the USSR, it continued to be used by a local flying club for sports and recreational aviation. The airfield is named after the nearby 'Ostra Mogila' memorial complex, a significant monument dedicated to soldiers of the Russian Civil War and World War II.
Effectively zero in the foreseeable future. The airfield is situated in territory currently occupied by the Russian Federation and remains part of an active warzone. There are no plans or prospects for reopening it for civilian use. Any potential future for the site is entirely contingent on the outcome of the Russo-Ukrainian War and the de-occupation of Luhansk Oblast. Even in a post-conflict scenario, its restoration would likely be a very low priority compared to the reconstruction of essential housing, utilities, and major transportation infrastructure.
