Late February 2022
The aerodrome was not officially closed by decree but was rendered completely non-operational due to its strategic location and subsequent destruction during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In late February and March 2022, during the Battle of Kyiv, Russian forces targeted and occupied the airfield. The infrastructure, including hangars, the runway, and aircraft, sustained catastrophic damage from shelling, airstrikes, and direct combat, making all aviation activities impossible.
The site is currently destroyed and non-operational. Following the liberation of Borodyanka by Ukrainian forces in April 2022, the extent of the devastation became clear. The runway is cratered and littered with debris, hangars are collapsed or heavily damaged, and the entire fleet of aircraft based there (including numerous An-2s, Aeroprakt light aircraft, and others) was destroyed. The site has been demined, but the infrastructure is in ruins. It stands as a stark example of the war's impact on civilian infrastructure and is often cited in reports documenting war crimes and destruction in the Kyiv Oblast.
Prior to its destruction, Borodyanka Air Base (more commonly known as Borodyanka Aerodrome) was a key center for civilian general and sports aviation in the Kyiv region. It was not a primary military air base for combat aircraft. Its main operations included:
- **Flight Training:** It housed several flight schools for private pilot licenses (PPL) and training on light aircraft.
- **Skydiving and Parachuting:** It was one of Ukraine's most popular drop zones, home to skydiving clubs that offered tandem jumps and sports parachuting.
- **General Aviation:** It served as a base for private aircraft owners and light aviation enthusiasts. The Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Aeroprakt often used the airfield for testing and demonstration flights of its light sport aircraft.
- **Air Shows and Events:** The airfield occasionally hosted aviation festivals and public events, showcasing aerobatics and various aircraft.
- **Emergency Services:** It was also reportedly used for training by units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. The ICAO code UA-0001 is a national identifier for smaller airfields within Ukraine, reflecting its status as a registered aerodrome rather than a major international or military airport.
There are currently no official, government-funded plans for the immediate reopening or reconstruction of the Borodyanka Aerodrome. The national focus remains on the ongoing war effort and the restoration of critical public infrastructure such as housing, utilities, and major transportation links. While the Ukrainian aviation community has expressed a strong desire to eventually rebuild the airfield post-war, any such project would be a long-term endeavor. Reconstruction would require significant investment and will likely only be considered as part of the broader, long-term recovery and rebuilding of Ukraine after the conflict has ended.
