Approximately 1998. While an exact date of official de-licensing is difficult to pinpoint, regular scheduled flights ceased around this time due to declining viability.
Primarily economic reasons driven by infrastructure development. The construction and subsequent opening of the Hsuehshan Tunnel (completed in 2006) drastically reduced ground travel time between Yilan and Taipei from over two hours to under 40 minutes. This made the short-haul flight economically unviable, as road and rail transport became far more efficient and cost-effective, leading to the cessation of all commercial operations.
The site has been completely redeveloped and no longer exists as an airfield. The former runway and airport grounds have been repurposed to become the modern administrative and recreational heart of Yilan County. The land is now occupied by the Yilan County Government Administrative Center (宜蘭縣政中心), the Yilan County Council, the Yilan District Court, and the expansive Yilan Sports Park (宜蘭運動公園), which includes stadiums, green spaces, and recreational facilities.
Ilan Airfield served as a small domestic civil airport. Its primary function was to connect Yilan County with the capital, Taipei (flying into Songshan Airport). It was a vital transportation link for government officials, business travelers, and residents before the completion of modern freeway infrastructure. The airport was primarily operated by the now-defunct domestic carrier Taiwan Airlines (臺灣航空公司), which flew small propeller aircraft like the Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander on this route. It was never a major military base or an international airport; its significance was purely in regional domestic transport for a relatively brief period.
Effectively zero. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for major civic and administrative infrastructure. The original economic rationale for the airport's existence has been completely eliminated by the Hsuehshan Tunnel and improved highway network. There are no active plans or realistic prospects for reopening an airport at this specific location.
