The airport ceased operations on or around June 17, 2007. This date coincides with the official opening and transfer of all air traffic to the new Şanlıurfa GAP Airport.
The airport was closed because it was replaced by the new, larger, and more modern Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (IATA: GNY, ICAO: LTCS). The old airport had several limitations that necessitated its replacement: it was located too close to the city center, its runway was too short to accommodate larger aircraft, and its facilities were insufficient for the growing passenger and cargo traffic projected for the region, especially in connection with the Southeastern Anatolia Project (Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi - GAP).
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the city's urban landscape. The land where the runway, apron, and terminal once stood is now occupied by numerous commercial and public facilities. Key developments on the former airport grounds include the Piazza AVM (a large shopping mall), the Şanlıurfa Exhibition Center (Şanlıurfa Fuar Merkezi), hotels, residential buildings, and a large public park named 11 Nisan Parkı. The original aviation infrastructure has been entirely removed.
This was the original primary airport for the city of Şanlıurfa for several decades. When operational, its codes were IATA: SFQ and ICAO: LTCH. It served as a vital link for the region, handling domestic flights primarily to and from major Turkish hubs like Istanbul and Ankara. Airlines such as Turkish Airlines were the main operators. The airport was crucial for the city's business, tourism, and administrative connectivity until its capacity was outgrown by the city's rapid expansion and economic development.
There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for urban development, making any return to aviation activities physically impossible. All of Şanlıurfa's air transportation needs are now served by the Şanlıurfa GAP Airport, located approximately 35 kilometers northeast of the city.
