Approximately 2010. The airport was effectively closed and ceased all significant operations with the inauguration of the new Gökçeada Airport (IATA: GKD, ICAO: LTFK) in August 2010.
Replacement by a new, modern airport. The old airfield had a short, unpaved or poorly maintained runway and lacked the necessary infrastructure (e.g., terminal, modern navigation aids) to support commercial flights or larger, modern military transport aircraft. The Turkish government built the new Gökçeada Airport to boost tourism and provide a more capable facility for both civilian and military needs, rendering the old strip obsolete.
The site is inactive and permanently closed to aviation. Satellite imagery confirms the runway is still visible but is unmaintained, with no markings, and vegetation is encroaching. The airfield is located within a restricted military zone and is part of the area used by the Turkish Army's 5th Commando Regiment Command. It may be used for ground-based military training or drills, but it is not an operational airfield.
The Gokceada Old Airport was primarily a military airstrip. Given Gökçeada's strategic location in the Aegean Sea, the airfield was used by the Turkish Armed Forces for logistical support, troop movement, and liaison flights to the significant military garrison on the island (notably the 5th Commando Regiment). It likely handled helicopters and light STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) transport aircraft. It was never a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger services.
There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening the old airport. All aviation investment and focus are directed at the new Gökçeada Airport (LTFK), which serves the island's needs. The old site is considered permanently defunct for aviation purposes.
