Approximately between 2009 and 2011. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates that the airfield was still intact in the late 2000s, but major construction for a new facility on the runway and apron began around 2011-2012, confirming that flight operations had ceased by this time.
Military Conversion and Consolidation. The primary reason for the closure was the strategic decision by the Turkish Armed Forces to redevelop the site. The airfield was decommissioned to build the modern Karamürselbey Training Center Command for the Turkish Navy. Concurrently, Turkish Naval Air Command operations were consolidated at the nearby, larger Cengiz Topel Naval Air Station (ICAO: LTBQ).
The site is now the location of the Karamürselbey Eğitim Merkezi Komutanlığı (Karamürselbey Training Center Command). This is a large, modern, and active training base for the Turkish Navy, providing education for various naval ratings and officer candidates. New barracks, administrative buildings, and state-of-the-art training facilities have been built directly over the western half of the former runway and aircraft parking areas. The eastern portion of the runway is still visible but is unmaintained, bisected by roads, and used for non-aviation purposes such as drills, parades, and vehicle parking.
Karamürselbey Airfield was a historically vital base for the Turkish Naval Air Command (Deniz Hava Komutanlığı). For many years, it served as the main training hub for all Turkish naval aviators and aircrews. Its role was foundational, providing initial flight training, specialized maritime patrol skills, and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) techniques. The base operated a variety of aircraft, most notably trainers like the T-34 Mentor and maritime patrol aircraft like the S-2 Tracker. Its location on the coast of the Sea of Marmara was ideal for maritime-focused aviation training and exercises.
None. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Karamürselbey as an airfield. The extensive and permanent construction of the Karamürselbey Training Center Command on the airfield's footprint makes its reactivation as an airport functionally impossible without the complete demolition of the current military installation.
