The airport did not have a formal, official closure date as it was a small, non-commercial airstrip. It effectively ceased operations and became obsolete with the opening of the major regional Ordu-Giresun Airport (OGU) in May 2015, after which its land was repurposed.
Economic and infrastructural redundancy. The primary reason for its closure was the opening of the nearby, modern Ordu-Giresun Airport. This new, state-of-the-art airport, built on an artificial island, serves the entire region and eliminated any need for the small, unpaved Ünye airstrip. The land it occupied was subsequently redeveloped for more valuable commercial and public infrastructure.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped and is unrecognizable as an airfield. The land now hosts significant public and commercial infrastructure, most notably the Ünye Intercity Bus Terminal (Ünye Şehirlerarası Otobüs Terminali). Additionally, a vehicle inspection station (TÜVTÜRK) and other commercial buildings occupy the former airstrip's location.
Ünye Airport was a small, unpaved (grass/dirt) airstrip that never handled scheduled commercial passenger traffic. Its historical significance was purely local. The primary operation it handled was agricultural aviation; it served as a base for crop-dusting planes that were vital for the region's extensive hazelnut production. It was also used for general aviation purposes, such as private light aircraft and recreational flying.
Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The site has been permanently and completely redeveloped. Furthermore, the aviation needs of Ünye and the surrounding region are comprehensively met by the nearby Ordu-Giresun Airport (OGU), making the revival of a small local airstrip unnecessary and unfeasible.
