The airport did not have a specific, publicly announced closure date. It was gradually phased out of active aviation use, likely during the late 1990s and early 2000s, as its functions became obsolete.
Military conversion and technological obsolescence. The airfield was part of the Polatlı Artillery and Missile School Command. Its primary role for light observation and liaison aircraft became redundant with the increased use of helicopters and the advent of modern Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for artillery spotting and training. The land was repurposed for the expansion of ground-based military training facilities and infrastructure within the active base.
The site is an active and integral part of the Polatlı Artillery and Missile School Command military base. The original runway is no longer usable for aircraft. While its outline is still visible from satellite imagery, it has been bisected by roads and is partially used for vehicle parking, driver training, and other ground-based military exercises. It is not abandoned but has been fully repurposed within the confines of the secure military installation.
The airport's significance is purely military. It served as an integral airstrip for the Turkish Land Forces' Polatlı Artillery and Missile School (Topçu ve Füze Okulu Komutanlığı), one of the most important training centers for the Turkish Army. Operations primarily consisted of flights by light aircraft and possibly early-generation UAVs for artillery observation training, target spotting, and liaison duties. It was never a public or commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger or cargo traffic. The ICAO code TR-0031 is a national, non-standard identifier, further indicating its status as a special-purpose military field rather than a public airport.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. Its reopening is considered extremely unlikely due to several factors: 1) The land has been repurposed and is now critical for the ground training operations of the active military base. 2) The runway infrastructure is degraded and partially built over. 3) The nearby capital, Ankara, is well-served by Esenboğa International Airport (LTAC) for civil aviation and Etimesgut Air Base (LTAD) for military aviation, negating any strategic need for this airfield.
