The airfield was officially and permanently closed around 2019. While it may have been militarily inactive for a period before this, the definitive closure event was the allocation of the land for industrial development.
The land of the former military airfield was strategically reallocated by the Turkish government for the construction of the TOGG (Turkey's Automobile Joint Venture Group) national electric vehicle manufacturing plant. This was a decision to repurpose underutilized military land for a project of high national industrial and economic importance, rather than closure due to economic failure, safety concerns, or an accident.
The site of the former Gemlik Airfield is now the location of the TOGG Technology Campus, the massive, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant for Turkey's first domestic electric car. The factory, including its production lines, administrative buildings, and a vehicle test track, has been built directly over the old runway and airfield grounds. The original airfield infrastructure has been completely removed and redeveloped. The test track for the new vehicles partially follows the path of the old runway.
Gemlik Airfield was a military airbase, not a public commercial airport. Its primary role was to support the Turkish Armed Forces, likely the Turkish Air Force and Army Aviation units, for logistical, operational, and training purposes in the strategically important Marmara region. It featured a single asphalt runway (approximately 1.3 km / 4,200 ft) and basic facilities suitable for military transport aircraft (like the C-160 Transall), helicopters, and other light aircraft. It did not handle any scheduled passenger or public cargo flights.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Gemlik Airfield. The land has been permanently and completely repurposed for the TOGG automotive factory, a project of major national significance. The physical infrastructure of the airport no longer exists, making any future aviation use at this specific location impossible.
