Approximately 2017-2018. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates that the runway was marked with permanent closure 'X' symbols around this period. The airfield had likely fallen into disuse for several years prior to its official marking as closed.
The closure was primarily due to economic and logistical factors. As a private corporate airfield, its maintenance and operational costs likely became redundant following the modernization and expansion of the public Çanakkale Airport (CKZ), located approximately 70 km away. The land occupied by the airfield also became more valuable for the expansion of the adjacent industrial facilities owned by the Kale Group, making its conversion a practical business decision.
The site is no longer an active airfield. The asphalt runway is still visible but is in a state of significant disrepair and is clearly marked at both ends with large white 'X's, the standard visual indicator for a permanently closed runway. The land has been partially absorbed by the sprawling Kale Group industrial complex that it once served. Former apron and taxiway areas are now used for the open-air storage of industrial goods, raw materials, and equipment. New industrial buildings have also been constructed on the periphery of the former airfield grounds.
The facility was a private airfield owned and operated by the Kale Group, one of Turkey's largest industrial conglomerates, which specializes in ceramics, building materials, and defense. Known locally as 'Kale Airfield' (Kale Havaalanı), its main purpose was to serve the corporate travel needs of the company's executives, engineers, and VIP guests, providing direct and rapid access to their foundational manufacturing plants in Çan. The airfield handled private and corporate general aviation traffic, likely accommodating small-to-medium-sized propeller aircraft and business jets.
There are no known or publicly discussed plans to reopen the airfield. The expansion of the Kale Group's industrial operations onto the site, combined with the availability of the larger and better-equipped public Çanakkale Airport (CKZ), makes any prospect of reopening for aviation purposes extremely improbable. The land is now considered an integral part of the industrial zone.
