Ángel S. Adami International Airport (SUAA) is a controlled public general aviation airport located in Melilla, on the northwestern outskirts of Montevideo, Uruguay. It is also known as Aeródromo de Melilla.
Type of facility and operations: SUAA primarily serves general aviation, accommodating flight schools, aero clubs, and aircraft maintenance workshops. It permits both Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Visual Flight Rules (VFR) traffic. The airport has a single concrete runway, designated 01/19, which is 1,250 meters (4,101 feet) long. It is categorized as an Airport of Entry with customs and immigration services available.
Notable features or history: Founded in 1920 as Aeródromo de Melilla, it initially served as Montevideo's primary airport. In 1946, it was renamed to honor Ángel Salvador Adami, a journalist and advocate for civil aviation in Uruguay. Commercial flights eventually shifted to the larger Carrasco International Airport (SUMU/MVD), and Ángel S. Adami Airport transitioned to its current role as a hub for general aviation. The Ministry of Defense in Uruguay reportedly has plans to modernize SUAA to be capable of receiving diverted flights from Montevideo Carrasco Airport.
Current status: Ángel S. Adami International Airport remains active as a general aviation hub. The airport's control tower generally operates from 10:00 to 01:00 UTC, and the airport itself has operational hours from Monday to Friday, 11:00 to 17:00 UTC. Customs and immigration services are available daily from 08:00 to 22:00 UTC. Fuel services (AVGAS and JET-A1) are also available. The airport is located approximately 15 kilometers northwest of central Montevideo.
