Taxis are the most common and convenient option. They are readily available outside the arrivals terminal. Fares to the city center (Plaza de Armas) are not metered, so it is essential to agree on a price with the driver before starting your journey. The trip usually takes about 10-15 minutes.
Car rental options are limited directly at the airport. It is highly recommended to book a vehicle in advance online from local or national rental agencies that can arrange for airport pickup and drop-off. Pre-booking is the most reliable way to secure a rental car.
There are no formal public bus or train services that connect directly to the airport terminal. The primary forms of local public transit, such as 'combis' (minivans) and 'colectivos' (shared taxis), operate on the main road near the airport but can be difficult to navigate for visitors, especially with luggage. Mototaxis are also available for short distances.
Forgot to say that takeoffs are not permitted at dusk no matter what. This seems to be common for the mountainous airports in Peru.
No fuel available at this time, nor for the last 7 years. Airport is on a mesa with high ground all around it. It has an NDB approach, but it doesn't work very well due to location except for enroute navigation. Runway surface has a lot of small, pea gravel sized aasphlt rocks on it, so use of reverse is not reccomended (nor needed, as the runway is plenty long). Airport elevation is about 9000 feet MSL. Good services as regards flight planning, walking distance cafes, taxis to town, bathrooms, etc. Helicopter operations are frequent in the vicinity. We use an overhead entry to a left downwind for runway 20, but the locals will often use a long straight in approach. Power lines on the ridge on final for rwy 20. Tower speaks pretty good English.
