The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates that the airport was active and well-maintained until at least 2015. By 2020, the runway shows clear signs of disuse and vegetation overgrowth, suggesting the airport was closed sometime between 2016 and 2019.
While no official reason has been published, the closure is almost certainly due to a combination of economic factors and logistical consolidation. The primary driver is the proximity of the much larger and better-equipped El Alcaraván Airport (SKYP/EYP) in Yopal, located only about 20 kilometers to the north. As road infrastructure in the region improved and operations at Yopal's airport became more robust (accommodating jet aircraft), the need for a small, private airstrip like El Porvenir diminished. It became more efficient and cost-effective for oil, gas, and agricultural companies to consolidate their air operations at the main regional airport.
As of the latest satellite imagery, the site is abandoned for aviation purposes. The single runway is still clearly visible from the air but is in a state of disrepair, unmaintained, and partially overgrown with grass and shrubs. There is no evidence of active use. The surrounding land continues to be used for agriculture and hosts infrastructure related to the oil industry, but the runway itself appears to be fallow land.
El Porvenir Airport was a private airstrip of significant local importance, primarily serving the booming oil and gas industry in the Casanare department, as well as large-scale agricultural and ranching operations. Its ICAO code, SK-069, was an unofficial designator typical for private fields in Colombia. During its active years, it handled general aviation and charter flights, facilitating the rapid transport of personnel, light cargo, and equipment directly to work sites near Aguazul. The airport would have typically accommodated aircraft such as the Cessna 206, Piper Navajo, Beechcraft King Air, and DHC-6 Twin Otter, which are essential for accessing remote areas in Colombia's eastern plains (Llanos Orientales).
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening El Porvenir Airport. Given its private nature and the superior capabilities and close proximity of Yopal's El Alcaraván Airport, there is no economic or logistical justification for its reactivation. The land is more likely to be fully converted for agricultural or industrial use in the future.
