The airfield ceased its primary military function in the early 1990s after the end of the Cold War. It fell into disuse over the following years and was permanently and officially closed to any potential aviation activity around 2010-2011, which is when the land was repurposed.
The primary reason for closure was the loss of its strategic military purpose. It was built as a backup/dispersal airfield for the Czechoslovak Air Force, and with the end of the Cold War, it became redundant. Subsequent economic non-viability for private or commercial use, combined with a more profitable opportunity to use the land, led to its final closure and conversion.
The site is permanently closed and is not used for any aviation activities. A significant portion of the airfield's land has been converted into a large photovoltaic power plant, known as FVE Parchovany. The original 2,500-meter concrete runway is still largely intact and clearly visible from satellite imagery, but it is in a state of decay, with vegetation growing through cracks and the surrounding area occupied by solar panel arrays. The site is now an energy generation facility.
Parchovany Airfield was a Cold War-era military installation. It served as a 'záložné letisko' (reserve airfield) for the Czechoslovak Air Force. These airfields were characterized by a single, long, and robust concrete runway with minimal permanent infrastructure, designed to allow for the dispersal of military aircraft (like MiG and Sukhoi jets) away from main operating bases in the event of a conflict. After its military decommissioning, it was likely used sporadically for agricultural aviation (crop dusting) or general aviation before falling into complete disrepair.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airfield. The substantial and permanent installation of the solar farm on the property makes any return to aviation use both economically and logistically impossible. The land has been irreversibly repurposed.
