Approximately 2014-2016. The exact date is not officially documented, but analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was still visible in 2013 but had been plowed over and integrated into surrounding farmland by 2016.
Primarily economic and change in land use. The airfield was a 'poľnohospodárske letisko' (agricultural airfield) operated by the local agricultural cooperative (Poľnohospodárske družstvo Kľačany). With the decline in the necessity for widespread agricultural aviation (due to more advanced ground-based methods) and the increasing value of arable land, it was no longer economically viable to maintain the airfield. The cooperative ceased aviation operations and reclaimed the land for cultivation.
The airfield is permanently closed and has been completely decommissioned. The land where the grass runway was located has been fully reintegrated into the adjacent fields and is now used for active farming. There are no remaining physical traces of the runway, taxiways, or any significant airfield infrastructure visible on the site. It is indistinguishable from the surrounding agricultural landscape.
Kľačany Airfield was a utility airfield with local, rather than national, significance. It was never a public airport for passenger or scheduled cargo traffic. Its primary role was to support agricultural aviation in the fertile region around the Nitra River. Operations included crop dusting, aerial seeding, and pest control. The airfield would have predominantly handled robust, short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) aircraft designed for this purpose, such as the iconic Czechoslovak-made Zlín Z-37 Čmelák ('Bumblebee') and possibly the Antonov An-2. It served as a vital base for the agricultural cooperative to efficiently manage large areas of farmland.
There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The complete conversion of the land back to agricultural use makes any future aviation activity at this specific location highly improbable. The site is no longer recognized or registered as an airfield by Slovak aviation authorities.
