Seymour Galapagos Ecological Airport (GPS), located on Isla Baltra, serves as the primary air gateway to the renowned Galapagos Islands. It plays a crucial role in managing the flow of tourists and residents while setting a benchmark for sustainable infrastructure in an ecologically sensitive region. The airport's history dates back to World War II, when the United States established it as a strategic airbase. After the war, it was transferred to Ecuador and converted for civilian use. A significant milestone occurred in 2012 with the inauguration of a new terminal, a pioneering structure built almost entirely from recycled materials. This terminal earned a LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it one of the first airports in the world to be recognized for its high standards of environmental design and carbon-neutral operations.

The airport is situated on the arid, largely uninhabited island of Baltra, separate from the main populated centers. To reach Puerto Ayora, the largest town on Santa Cruz Island, travelers undertake a multi-step journey. This typically involves a 10-minute bus ride from the terminal to the Itabaca Channel, followed by a short ferry crossing, and finally a 45-minute bus or taxi ride across Santa Cruz. Operationally, the airport is the busier of the two serving the Galapagos, exclusively handling domestic flights from Quito and Guayaquil on the Ecuadorian mainland. Major airlines providing regular service include Avianca Ecuador and LATAM Ecuador, which transport the majority of the region's visitors.

The terminal building is an attraction in itself, designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. Facilities for passengers are functional and include check-in counters, a security screening area, a departure lounge, and a small food court with cafes. Several souvenir shops offer local crafts and goods. A VIP lounge is also available for eligible passengers. For practical planning, travelers arriving at Baltra should be prepared to pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee, which is typically collected in cash upon arrival before baggage claim. When departing, it is essential to allow at least 90 minutes for the transfer from Puerto Ayora to the airport. Standard recommendations suggest arriving at the terminal two hours before your flight to accommodate check-in, baggage inspection for biosecurity, and security procedures.
