The airport was closed and replaced by the newly constructed Göteborg Landvetter Airport (ESGG / GOT). Torslanda's runway was too short to safely accommodate larger, modern jet aircraft like the Boeing 747 and DC-10, which were becoming standard for international travel. Its location, surrounded by urban development and terrain, made expansion impossible, leading to the decision to build a new, larger airport further from the city.
The former airport site has been completely redeveloped into a new urban district known as Amhult. The area now consists of residential housing, commercial centers, schools, and a business park. Some of the original infrastructure is still visible; for example, parts of the main runway and taxiways have been converted into public roads (e.g., 'Gamla Flygplatsvägen' - Old Airport Road). The historic terminal building has been preserved and restored, now housing a conference center, offices, a health center, and a restaurant, serving as a centerpiece for the new district.
Opened in 1923, Göteborg Torslanda Airport (former ICAO: ESGB, former IATA: GOT) served as the primary airport for Gothenburg, Sweden's second-largest city, for 54 years. It was a key hub for both domestic and international flights, operated by airlines like SAS, Linjeflyg, and various European carriers. The airport played a significant role during World War II, facilitating critical courier flights (the 'ball-bearing run') between neutral Sweden and the United Kingdom. It handled the transition from propeller aircraft to the jet age, serving aircraft like the Sud Aviation Caravelle and Douglas DC-9. Its iconic terminal building, designed in the functionalist style by the office of renowned architect Gunnar Asplund, is a preserved architectural landmark.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been fully and permanently repurposed for urban and commercial use, with extensive construction of buildings and infrastructure that makes a return to aviation operations impossible.
