Circa early 2000s
The airfield was closed due to the significant expansion of the adjacent Stockholm Skavsta Airport (ESKN). As Skavsta grew from a regional airport into a major international hub for low-cost carriers (notably Ryanair) in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the operation of a small, independent grass strip became incompatible with the increased commercial air traffic, stricter air traffic control procedures, and expanded security and infrastructure requirements.
The site of the former Nyge Airport is now fully integrated into the Stockholm Skavsta Airport (ESKN) operational area. The physical grass runway no longer exists or is not maintained, and the land is part of the airport's secured perimeter. The flying club that used the field, Nyge Flygklubb, relocated its operations to the main facilities of Stockholm Skavsta Airport, where it continues to operate.
Nyge Airport was a small general aviation airfield featuring a grass runway, located immediately east of the main runway at Stockholm Skavsta Airport. It was primarily used by the local flying club, Nyge Flygklubb, for recreational flying, flight training, and potentially glider operations. The airfield served the local private aviation community that utilized the area after the former F 11 military air wing was decommissioned in 1980. It represented a grassroots aviation presence alongside the developing civil airport before its large-scale commercialization.
There are no prospects for reopening Nyge Airport as a separate airfield. Its location within the operational boundaries and controlled airspace of a major international airport makes its independent existence unfeasible from a safety, security, and logistical standpoint. All general aviation activity in the immediate area is handled by Stockholm Skavsta Airport itself.
