The airfield, locally known as Hasslanda flygfält, officially closed on December 31, 2007. The Lund Flying Club's lease was terminated by the municipality, and all flight operations ceased on this date.
The primary reason for closure was urban expansion. The city of Lund required the land for a major new development project, the Brunnshög district. This large-scale project is focused on creating a new city district for science, research (including the MAX IV Laboratory and European Spallation Source), and residential housing. The airfield's location was directly in the path of this strategic urban development, making its continued operation untenable.
The former airfield site has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the Brunnshög district. The land where the runway, hangars, and clubhouse once stood has been transformed with new roads, research facilities, commercial buildings, and residential areas. There are no remaining physical traces of the airfield; it has been fully absorbed into the new urban landscape.
Established in 1966, Hasslanda Airfield was the home of Lunds flygklubb (Lund Flying Club) for over 40 years. It was a significant center for general aviation in the region. Its operations were not commercial or military; rather, they focused on recreational flying, flight training for private pilot licenses (PPL), and glider activities. The airfield served as an important social and technical hub for aviation enthusiasts and played a key role in fostering private aviation in southern Sweden.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Lund Airfield at its original location. The land has been irrevocably repurposed for the Brunnshög urban development project. The former operator, Lunds flygklubb, successfully relocated its operations to Sjöbo Airfield (ICAO: ESMI), located approximately 30 kilometers east of Lund, where it continues its activities.
