The site is a highly active military test and evaluation range operated by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). It is used for testing advanced weapon systems, drones (UAVs), aircraft, and electronic warfare systems for the Swedish Armed Forces and international partners, including NATO members. The facility includes a 2,302-meter runway and vast restricted airspace (R01 and R02) equipped with advanced telemetry, tracking radars, and optical sensors to monitor and analyze tests.

Established in 1958, Vidsel Air Base is the airfield component of the Vidsel Test Range (RFV - Robotförsöksplats Vidsel), the largest overland test range in Western Europe. It has been central to the development and testing of nearly all major Swedish aerospace and defense systems since the Cold War. This includes flight testing for Saab fighter aircraft like the 35 Draken, 37 Viggen, and the current JAS 39 Gripen. It has also been the primary site for testing Swedish-developed missile systems, such as the RBS 15 anti-ship missile and the IRIS-T air-to-air missile.
