Military Reorganization. The air base was closed as part of a major restructuring of the Swedish Armed Forces following the Defence Decision of 2004. This reform consolidated the separate helicopter units of the Army, Navy, and Air Force into a single joint organization, the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing (Helikopterflottiljen). As a result, the independent Army Air Base in Boden and its resident unit, the Norrland Helicopter Battalion, were disbanded to centralize helicopter operations at other main bases like Luleå and Linköping.
The site is no longer an active, permanently staffed air base for helicopter operations. However, it remains an active military area within the expansive Boden Garrison, which hosts the Norrbotten Regiment (I 19) and the Artillery Regiment (A 9). The airfield infrastructure, including the runway and helipads, is maintained and used as a training ground. It serves as a practice area for ground units, a site for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operations, and as a temporary Forward Operating Location (FOL) or landing zone for helicopters from the Helicopter Wing during military exercises in the region.
Boden Army Air Base, also known as Boden Heliport or AF 1 (Arméflygförband 1), was a strategically vital military installation during the Cold War. It was an integral part of the Boden Garrison, one of Sweden's most important defensive strongholds, designed to halt a potential Soviet invasion through the north. The base was home to the Norrland Helicopter Battalion (1. helikopterbataljonen), the Swedish Army's primary helicopter unit for the northern region. Its operations were critical for supporting ground troops across the vast and difficult terrain of Norrland. Key missions included anti-tank warfare, primarily using Hkp 9 (MBB Bo 105) helicopters equipped with anti-tank missiles, as well as reconnaissance, medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), artillery spotting, and troop/supply transport. The base ensured mobility and provided crucial fire support for the army brigades stationed in the north.
There are no official, publicly announced plans to permanently re-establish a helicopter squadron at the Boden base. However, the geopolitical landscape has shifted significantly with Sweden's accession to NATO and a renewed focus on defending the 'High North'. The Boden Garrison is undergoing substantial expansion and reinvestment. Consequently, the airfield is expected to see significantly increased use for national and allied exercises, and it serves as a key logistical site for deploying air assets to the region. While a full reactivation as a permanent base is not currently planned, its role as a strategic forward location for helicopter and other air operations is growing in importance.
