Approximately in the early 2000s. While an exact date is not officially recorded, the airfield ceased operations after it became economically non-viable around this period.
The closure was due to economic reasons. The airfield's primary operator lost a crucial mail transport contract, which was a vital source of revenue. This loss, combined with insufficient passenger numbers for its air taxi services, made continued operations financially unsustainable, leading to its abandonment.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. The site is returning to nature. Satellite imagery shows the runway is still a visible clearing in the forest but is heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and encroaching trees. The access roads are unmaintained forest tracks, and there are no remaining buildings or infrastructure in use. The site is not repurposed for any other activity.
Junosuando Airfield was a small but important local utility airport established in the 1980s. It served the remote village of Junosuando in Pajala Municipality, Norrbotten County. Its main purpose was to provide general aviation services, specifically 'taxiflyg' (air taxi) for passengers and the transport of mail. It acted as a vital link, connecting the community to larger regional centers like Gällivare and Kiruna. The airfield consisted of a single gravel/dirt runway approximately 800 meters (2,625 feet) in length.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Junosuando Airfield. The economic conditions that led to its closure have not changed, and the region's air service needs are met by the larger, operational Pajala Airport (PJA), located about 50 km to the southeast. The airfield is considered permanently defunct.
