Early 1960s
The airfield was a special-purpose airport built and owned by Vattenfall (the Swedish state power company). Its sole function was to support the construction of the Kultsjö hydroelectric power project in the 1950s. Upon the completion of the power plant and dam system around 1961, the logistical need for the airport vanished. It was closed as its primary purpose had been fulfilled, making it economically unviable to maintain for any other traffic.
The airport is permanently closed to all air traffic and is not maintained for aviation use. However, the paved runway remains largely intact. The site is now frequently used for recreational and private purposes, particularly motorsports. It is a popular venue for local motor clubs, such as SHRA Vilhelmina, which host legal drag racing events, car and motorcycle meets, and driver training courses on the former runway.
Stalons flygfält holds significant historical importance as a key piece of Swedish mid-20th-century industrial infrastructure. It was constructed in a remote, mountainous area with poor road access to serve as a vital lifeline for one of Sweden's largest hydroelectric projects. The airfield enabled the efficient transport of thousands of workers, engineers, specialized equipment, fresh food, and mail directly to the construction site. Operations were primarily conducted with chartered aircraft, most notably Douglas DC-3s operated by Airtaco (a predecessor to the domestic airline Linjeflyg). The airfield was instrumental in the successful and timely completion of the power plant that was crucial for Sweden's post-war industrial expansion.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Stalons flygfält for aviation. Its remote location, the lack of a modern commercial or industrial driver, and the proximity of the established Vilhelmina Airport (ESNZ/VHM) make its revival as a functional airport highly improbable. Its current use for motorsports is its established modern function.
