Storberg

The designation 'closed' in some unofficial aviation databases stems from the fact that it is a private facility, not open to public or general aviation traffic. It was purpose-built as a private test track and did not 'close' in the traditional sense of an airport shutting down. It remains in active, private use.

The site is an active, high-security automotive proving ground. It is used extensively from November to April for winter testing by numerous international automotive companies. The facility includes the main runway, multiple ice and snow handling tracks, and large paved areas that are prepared with different friction levels for testing vehicle dynamics and safety systems. It is a key component of the region's economy, which is heavily reliant on the winter car testing industry.

The site, known as the Storberg Proving Ground or Storberg Test Track, has no history as a public or military airport. Its significance lies entirely within the automotive industry. It was constructed as a state-of-the-art vehicle testing facility, part of the larger cluster of proving grounds around Arvidsjaur and Arjeplog in northern Sweden, often called 'Lapland Proving Grounds'. The long runway (approximately 2,500 meters) and extensive paved areas were designed for high-speed vehicle tests, brake system development (ABS, ESC), tire testing, and autonomous driving validation in extreme cold and icy conditions. It has been a critical piece of infrastructure for major global car manufacturers and automotive suppliers since its construction.
