Circa 2003. The airport was rendered obsolete and closed upon the inauguration and commencement of operations at the new King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Airport (IATA: DWD, ICAO: OEDM), which officially opened in 2003.
Replacement by a new, modern facility. The old Dawadmi Domestic Airport (SA-0091) was a small airfield with limited infrastructure. It was replaced by the much larger and more modern King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Airport, built to accommodate larger aircraft, handle increased passenger traffic, and provide better services in line with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's national infrastructure development goals.
The site is now a defunct and abandoned airfield. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (24.5, 44.400002) clearly shows the remnants of a single runway and associated taxiways. The asphalt surfaces are degraded and unmaintained. The former terminal and support buildings are either abandoned or have been repurposed for non-aviation use. The site is not used for any official aviation activities and is closed to all air traffic.
Prior to its closure, this airport was the primary air gateway for the Dawadmi Governorate and its surrounding areas. It was a vital link for the region, handling domestic flights, primarily operated by the national carrier Saudia (formerly Saudi Arabian Airlines), connecting Dawadmi to major cities like Riyadh and Jeddah. The airport also supported general aviation, private charters, and government/military flights. Its existence was crucial for the economic and social development of this relatively remote region, facilitating business travel, access to healthcare, and government administration.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the old Dawadmi Domestic Airport. Its functions have been entirely and permanently superseded by the modern King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Airport (OEDM), which is located approximately 25 km to the west of the old site and fully serves the region's current and projected aviation needs. Reopening the old, outdated facility would be economically and logistically unfeasible.
