Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The last flight from Rzhevka Airport departed in 2006. The airport was officially closed and removed from the state register of civil airfields of the Russian Federation in 2007.

Reason for Closure

The closure was driven by a combination of economic and urban development factors. The airport's operations had become unprofitable, and its location within the expanding city limits of St. Petersburg made its land highly valuable for real estate. The noise from aircraft was also a growing concern for the surrounding residential areas. Ultimately, the territory was sold to a major developer (LSR Group) for the construction of a new residential district.

Current Status

The former airport site has been completely redeveloped. The runways, taxiways, and most of the original airport infrastructure have been demolished. The land is now the site of a massive residential housing complex, with numerous apartment buildings constructed and more under development. The area has been fully integrated into the urban fabric of St. Petersburg.

Historical Significance

Rzhevka Airport (correct former ICAO: ULSS, IATA: RVH) has immense historical significance for St. Petersburg. Originally a military airfield known as 'Smolnoye', it played a crucial role during the Siege of Leningrad in World War II. It was a vital component of the 'Road of Life' air bridge, facilitating the transport of food, medicine, and supplies into the besieged city and the evacuation of civilians and wounded soldiers. After the war, it became the city's second civilian airport, handling regional and local flights primarily to destinations in northwestern Russia. It served as a hub for small aircraft like the An-24, Yak-40, and An-2, as well as helicopters. The airport was also a base for general aviation, including medical services, aerial surveys, and flight training.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening Rzhevka Airport. The land has been irrevocably converted for dense residential use, and the surrounding area is now heavily populated. The restoration of any aviation activity at this location is physically and logistically impossible.
