Approximately 1989-1992
Military Drawdown and Obsolescence. The air base was closed following the end of the Cold War, which led to the large-scale restructuring and downsizing of the Soviet/Russian military. The specific unit stationed there, the 4th Guards Naval Fighter Aviation Regiment, was disbanded around this time, and its primary aircraft, the Sukhoi Su-15TM 'Flagon' interceptor, was being retired from service across the armed forces. There was no longer a strategic or operational need for the base.
The air base is completely abandoned and in a state of advanced decay. Satellite imagery and ground reports show the concrete runway, taxiways, and hardened aircraft shelters are still visible but are heavily deteriorated, cracked, and overgrown with grass and trees. Most hangars, barracks, and administrative buildings are in ruins, having been either dismantled for building materials by locals or having collapsed due to neglect and weather over the decades. The site is a popular destination for urban explorers and military history enthusiasts.
The air base has a significant dual history.
**German Era (pre-1945):** Originally a German Luftwaffe airfield known as Flugplatz Neukuhren, it was a key air base in East Prussia during World War II. It hosted various units, including elements of famous fighter wings like Jagdgeschwader 51 (JG 51 'Mölders'), flying aircraft such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190. The base was heavily involved in the final, desperate air battles over East Prussia in 1944-1945 as Soviet forces advanced.
**Soviet Era (1945-1992):** After the war, the base was taken over by Soviet Naval Aviation (Aviatsiya Voyenno-morskogo Flota) and renamed Marienkhof. It became the home of the decorated 4th Guards 'Orshansky' Red Banner Order of Suvorov Fighter Aviation Regiment (4 GvIAP VVS VMF) of the Baltic Fleet. For decades, it was a crucial air defense outpost on the Baltic coast, tasked with intercepting NATO reconnaissance and bomber aircraft over the Baltic Sea. The regiment flew a succession of fighter jets, including the Yak-9, MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-19, and finally the all-weather interceptor Su-15TM 'Flagon' until the base's closure.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Marienkhof Air Base. The primary civilian and military air transport hub for the Kaliningrad Oblast, Khrabrovo Airport (UMKK), is located only about 20 km to the southeast and has been extensively modernized to handle all regional traffic. The extensive decay of Marienkhof's infrastructure would require a complete and prohibitively expensive reconstruction, making any reactivation for either military or civilian purposes economically and logistically unfeasible.
