Mid-1990s (approximately 1993-1995)
The airstrip was closed due to economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The widespread collapse of the state-subsidized local air services network (Местные воздушные линии - МВЛ) made operations financially unviable. The rising costs of fuel and aircraft maintenance, coupled with the end of government funding, led to the cessation of regular flights to many remote settlements like Kuzomen across Russia.
The site is abandoned and inactive for any official aviation purposes. The unpaved runway is still visible on satellite imagery but is unmaintained, overgrown in places, and lacks any infrastructure such as buildings or markings. The area is now occasionally used by locals and tourists with off-road vehicles to access the nearby natural landmark, the Kuzomen Sands (Кузоменские пески). It is effectively a dirt track in an open field.
During the Soviet era, the Kuzomen Airstrip was a vital transportation link for the remote village of Kuzomen, located on the Tersky Coast of the White Sea. Due to its isolation and difficult land access, the airstrip was crucial for the community's survival and connection to the outside world. Operations primarily consisted of scheduled passenger, mail, and cargo flights, typically flown with Antonov An-2 biplanes. These flights connected Kuzomen with the district center, Umba, and other regional towns. The airstrip also supported sanitary aviation (medical evacuation), geological surveys, and aerial patrols for the region.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the Kuzomen Airstrip. The village's small and declining population, combined with the high cost of restoring infrastructure and subsidizing flights, makes a revival economically unfeasible. While there are broader discussions in Russia about developing regional aviation, efforts are focused on larger or more strategically important locations. Access to Kuzomen is now primarily via a challenging unpaved road.
