Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Early 1990s

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. The airport's closure was a direct consequence of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The centralized, state-subsidized regional aviation network (known as Local Air Lines or MVL - Местные воздушные линии) collapsed due to a severe economic crisis. The abrupt end of state funding, soaring fuel and maintenance costs, and a sharp decline in passenger demand made operations at thousands of small, rural airfields like Maryovo economically unsustainable.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a faint outline of a former unpaved/grass runway that is now entirely overgrown with grass and shrubs. There are no visible remnants of any airport infrastructure such as a terminal building, hangars, or control tower. The land has reverted to being an open field and is not used for any aviation-related activities.

Historical Significance

Maryovo Airport was a typical Soviet-era local airfield. Its primary role was to provide essential transportation links for the rural community of Maryovo and the surrounding district. It connected the town to the regional administrative center (likely Novgorod) and other remote settlements. Operations were almost exclusively handled by versatile Antonov An-2 biplanes, which were capable of landing on unpaved runways. These aircraft transported passengers, mail, light cargo, and medical supplies, and were also used for agricultural purposes (crop-dusting) and emergency medical evacuations. The airport was a vital piece of infrastructure that ensured connectivity and access to services for a remote area before the widespread availability of reliable road transport.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or realistic prospects for reopening Maryovo Airport. The original economic and logistical need for such an airfield no longer exists. Ground transportation infrastructure has improved, and the population and economic activity in the region are insufficient to support even minimal air service. Re-establishing the airport would require a complete reconstruction of the runway and all supporting facilities, an investment for which there is no economic justification.
