Passenger operations ceased in the early 1990s, with the airport officially being de-certified and fully closed in the subsequent years, likely by the early 2000s. There is no single definitive date, as the decline was gradual.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The sharp decline in domestic and regional air travel, the breakup of the state-owned Aeroflot into smaller, less stable airlines, and the inability to fund the airport's upkeep and modernization made its operation unsustainable. Its proximity to Moscow's larger airports also made it less competitive for passenger traffic.
The airport is defunct and its infrastructure is in a state of decay. The main runway and aprons are still visible but are no longer maintained for aviation. The site's primary use today is as a large, open-air automobile market (авторынок). The paved surfaces are also frequently used by local driving schools for practice. Some of the former airport buildings are either abandoned or have been repurposed for storage and small-scale commercial use related to the car market.
Turlatovo was the primary civilian airport for the city of Ryazan and the surrounding Ryazan Oblast during the Soviet era. It was a typical regional airport handling short-haul passenger and cargo flights. Operations primarily involved aircraft like the Antonov An-2, Let L-410 Turbolet, and occasionally the Yakovlev Yak-40. It connected Ryazan with other regional centers across the Russian SFSR, such as Voronezh, Lipetsk, Tambov, and had flights to smaller Moscow airports like Bykovo. The airport was also a base for agricultural aviation (crop dusting) and sanitary aviation (medical flights), which were vital services for the region.
Prospects for reopening Turlatovo Airport itself are virtually non-existent. The infrastructure is considered obsolete and too degraded to meet modern aviation standards, and the location is now encroached upon by other developments. However, the topic of restoring regular air service to the Ryazan region is periodically discussed by local authorities. These discussions do not focus on Turlatovo, but rather on the possibility of creating a civilian passenger terminal at one of the nearby military airbases, such as Dyagilevo (a long-range aviation base) or Protasovo. As of now, these remain long-term plans with no concrete timeline for implementation.
