The heliport ceased regular, scheduled operations in the mid-to-late 1990s. An exact date is not documented, but its closure aligns with the widespread collapse of state-funded local air services in Russia following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The closure was due to economic reasons. The transition to a market economy in the 1990s eliminated the heavy state subsidies that made the vast network of local Soviet-era air routes viable. The decline in state-supported industries, such as the gold mining operations that the settlement of Verkhniy Amyl was built around, further reduced the demand for air services, making the heliport economically unsustainable.
The site is decommissioned and no longer functions as an official, certified heliport. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals an open, unmaintained grassy field where the landing area once was. There are no remaining aviation markings, lighting, or support facilities. While the clearing is still visible and could theoretically be used for an occasional, ad-hoc helicopter landing by private or emergency services, it is for all practical purposes an abandoned airfield.
During the Soviet era, the Verkhniy Amyl Heliport was a vital transportation link for its remote, mountainous community. It was an integral part of the 'Local Air Lines' (Местные воздушные линии - MVL) network, which was managed by Aeroflot. Operations primarily involved helicopters, likely models such as the Mil Mi-8 and Mi-2, which were essential for navigating the difficult terrain. The heliport facilitated the transport of workers for the local gold mines, delivered mail and essential supplies, and provided critical medical evacuation (sanaviatsiya) services. It connected the isolated settlement to regional centers like Karatuzskoye, effectively serving as a lifeline for the community.
There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening the Verkhniy Amyl Heliport. While Russia has regional programs aimed at reviving some key northern and remote airfields, these initiatives focus on larger settlements with greater strategic or economic importance. Given the small population of Verkhniy Amyl and the high cost associated with re-certifying and maintaining aviation infrastructure, a state-funded reopening is considered highly improbable.
