Approximately 1998
The closure was a direct result of military downsizing following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The air base was home to the 523rd Fighter Aviation Regiment, which was disbanded around 1998 as part of widespread Russian armed forces reforms and budget cuts during that era. It was not closed due to an accident or civilian economic reasons.
The air base is completely abandoned and in a state of advanced decay. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly defined runway, extensive taxiways, and numerous hardened aircraft shelters (HAS), all of which are visibly deteriorating, with cracks and significant vegetation growth. The facility is derelict and not used for any aviation or other official purposes.
Ignat'yevka was a significant Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO) air base during the Cold War, strategically located in the Russian Far East. Its primary mission was to provide air defense against potential incursions from the Pacific. The base was home to the 523rd Orshanskiy Fighter Aviation Regiment (523 IAP). Over its operational history, this regiment flew a series of interceptor aircraft, including the MiG-17, Yak-28P, MiG-23MLD, and, in its final years, the highly capable Sukhoi Su-27 'Flanker'. The presence of Su-27s underscored its importance in the Soviet air defense network until its closure.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Ignat'yevka Air Base. The infrastructure would require a complete and costly overhaul to be made operational again. Given the large number of other active and reserve military airfields in the Russian Far East, there is no apparent strategic or economic justification for its reactivation.
