Approximately 1993-1994
The airfield was closed due to large-scale military restructuring and downsizing following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The aviation regiments stationed at the base were disbanded or relocated, and the facility was abandoned due to a lack of strategic necessity and the economic inability to maintain it.
The airfield is completely abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery confirms that the main runway, taxiways, and aircraft revetments (hardstands) are still intact but are in a state of severe decay, with concrete crumbling and vegetation growing through cracks. The associated technical buildings and the military garrison (known as a 'gorodok') are derelict and have fallen into ruin. The site is not used for any official purpose and is a popular location for urban explorers and photographers documenting abandoned Soviet military installations.
Avdeyevka Airfield was a significant Soviet military airbase in the Far East Military District, playing a key role during the Cold War. It primarily hosted units of the Soviet Air Forces and Soviet Naval Aviation. Key operations and units included:
- **219th Separate Long-Range Reconnaissance Aviation Regiment (219th ODRAP):** Part of the Pacific Fleet's naval aviation, this regiment flew Tupolev Tu-16R/RM reconnaissance aircraft, conducting maritime surveillance and intelligence-gathering missions over the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean.
- **Fighter-Bomber Regiments:** The airfield also hosted fighter-bomber regiments, such as the 302nd Aviation Regiment of Fighter-Bombers (302nd APIB), which operated Sukhoi Su-17M3 aircraft. These units were tasked with providing ground attack and tactical strike capabilities.
The base featured a long concrete runway (approx. 2500 meters) and extensive infrastructure, including hardened aircraft shelters, capable of supporting medium to heavy military aircraft.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening the Avdeyevka Airfield. The cost to restore the runway, taxiways, and all associated infrastructure to operational standards would be prohibitive. Given the number of other active and reserve military airfields in Russia's Far East, there is no apparent strategic or economic justification for its reactivation.
