Approximately early to mid-1990s. There is no exact official date, as the closure was a gradual process of abandonment rather than a single event.
Economic reasons. The airfield was operated by the DOSAAF (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy), a Soviet-era paramilitary sports organization. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, state funding for the extensive DOSAAF network collapsed. This led to a lack of resources for fuel, aircraft maintenance, and facility upkeep, forcing the closure of numerous small airfields across Russia, including Artemovsky.
The airfield is completely abandoned and in a state of dereliction. Satellite imagery shows a clearly defined but severely degraded runway and taxiway system. The surfaces are cracked, broken, and heavily overgrown with grass and shrubs, making them unusable for any aviation purposes. The few buildings on the site are in ruins. The area is sometimes used by locals for unauthorized activities such as car drifting, drone flying, or as a place for informal gatherings, but it has no official function.
The airfield, also known locally as Yegorshino Airfield (Аэродром Егоршино), was a significant local center for aviation sports and pre-military training. Its primary operator was the Yegorshino Aviation Sports Club (АСК) of DOSAAF. Operations consisted mainly of:
1. Initial pilot training on aircraft like the Yakovlev Yak-52.
2. Parachute jumping, primarily from Antonov An-2 biplanes.
It served as a training ground for civilian sport pilots, parachutists, and youths aspiring to join the Soviet Air Force. The airfield did not handle scheduled commercial passenger or cargo traffic.
There are no known or credible plans to reopen or redevelop the Artemovsky airfield for aviation use. The cost of restoring the runway, taxiways, and building the necessary modern infrastructure would be substantial. Given the lack of local economic demand for a regional airfield and the proximity of the large, well-equipped Koltsovo International Airport (USSS) in Yekaterinburg, the prospects for its revival are considered nonexistent.
