Approximately early to mid-1990s.
The airport was closed primarily for economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The extensive, state-subsidized regional aviation network, which Pionery was a part of, became financially unsustainable. The collapse of the centralized Aeroflot system, coupled with a sharp decline in passenger demand and soaring operational costs, led to the closure of numerous small, local airfields across Russia.
The airport is completely abandoned and in a state of decay. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals the faint but clear outline of a single, unpaved runway and associated taxiways. The entire area is heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and small trees, rendering it unusable for any aviation activity. There are no intact buildings or infrastructure remaining on the site. The land is effectively unused and is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Pionery Airport was a small civilian airfield that served as a vital transportation link for the village of Kostromskoye and surrounding communities on Sakhalin Island. It was an integral part of the Soviet 'Local Air Lines' (Местные воздушные линии - МВЛ) network, operated by Aeroflot. The airport facilitated essential passenger travel and the transport of mail, cargo, and medical supplies, connecting the remote area to larger towns and the regional capital, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Operations were primarily conducted using rugged and versatile aircraft suitable for unpaved runways, such as the Antonov An-2 biplane and likely helicopters like the Mil Mi-8.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Pionery Airport. The focus of aviation development in the Sakhalin Oblast is on modernizing the main international airport in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and maintaining a few key regional hubs. The significant investment required to rebuild the runway and infrastructure at Pionery, combined with the small local population and limited economic demand, makes its revival commercially and logistically unfeasible.
