The exact date of closure is not officially documented, but it is widely understood to have ceased operations in the post-Soviet period, likely during the 1990s. This timeframe aligns with the widespread closure of small, local airfields across Russia.
The closure was primarily due to economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. State subsidies for the vast network of local air services, previously operated by Aeroflot, were eliminated. This made operations to small, remote communities like Vorogovo financially unsustainable due to high costs of fuel, aircraft maintenance, and infrastructure upkeep, coupled with low passenger and cargo volumes. The general economic decline of the era further reduced the demand for air travel, leading to the abandonment of the airfield.
The airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals a clearly defined but overgrown and unmaintained dirt/grass runway. There are no visible signs of airport infrastructure such as a terminal, hangars, or navigation equipment remaining at the site. The area is unused and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding taiga forest. The village of Vorogovo now relies on seasonal transportation methods: river transport on the Yenisei during the ice-free months and winter roads ('zimniks') during the winter. For year-round urgent transport, such as medical emergencies, a separate helipad is maintained and used in or near the village.
During its operational years in the Soviet era, Vorogovo Airport was a vital transportation hub for the remote village of Vorogovo. Located on the banks of the Yenisei River with no year-round road access, the airport provided a critical lifeline to the outside world. It handled regular passenger and cargo flights, connecting the community to regional centers like Yeniseysk and Turukhansk. Operations were essential for mail delivery, medical transportation and evacuations, and the supply of essential goods. The airfield typically serviced rugged, STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capable aircraft suitable for unpaved runways, such as the Antonov An-2 biplane and possibly larger turboprops like the Let L-410 or Antonov An-24.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Vorogovo Airport. The economic and logistical challenges that led to its closure remain. The cost to rebuild the runway, construct necessary infrastructure, and certify the airfield for modern operations would be prohibitively expensive relative to the needs of the small local population. The current model of using helicopters for essential services and seasonal ground/river transport for bulk goods is considered a more economically viable solution for the community.
