The airport ceased regular operations in the mid-to-late 1990s. It was rendered completely obsolete and permanently closed following the official abolition of the settlement of Lebed by a resolution of the Evenki Autonomous Okrug on October 1, 2004.
The closure was for economic reasons, directly linked to the collapse of the local industry it was built to support. The airport's sole purpose was to serve the settlement of Lebed, which was established in the 1970s as a base for the Kuyumbinskaya oil and gas exploration expedition. After the dissolution of the USSR, state funding for the expedition ceased, leading to its shutdown. As a result, the settlement's population dwindled until it was completely abandoned, making the airport economically unviable and ultimately unnecessary.
The site is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery clearly shows the remnants of a single, unpaved runway, which is now heavily overgrown and being reclaimed by the Siberian taiga. There are no standing buildings, terminals, or any other aviation infrastructure left. The former settlement of Lebed is also a ghost town, with buildings in ruins. The site is not used for any purpose and is inaccessible by regular means.
Lebed Airport was a vital piece of Soviet-era transportation infrastructure in a remote part of Siberia. Its primary and only significant role was to provide logistical support for the Kuyumbinskaya oil and gas exploration expedition and the associated settlement of Lebed. It served as the main hub for transporting personnel, mail, food, and essential equipment. Operations were typical for a remote Siberian airfield, likely handling regional passenger and cargo flights operated by Aeroflot's Krasnoyarsk division, using rugged aircraft like the Antonov An-2 and helicopters such as the Mi-8.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening Lebed Airport. The primary reason for its existence—the settlement of Lebed—was officially liquidated and no longer exists. While oil and gas exploration has resumed in the wider region (Kuyumbinskoye field), modern logistical operations rely on winter roads and helicopter support from larger, active regional hubs, making the reconstruction of this remote and long-abandoned airstrip both unnecessary and economically infeasible.
