Approximately 2012-2013. While an exact official date is not widely publicized, aviation activity ceased and land redevelopment began around this period.
Primarily economic, driven by the sale of the land for real estate development. The airfield's location, close to the expanding city of Nizhny Novgorod, made the land highly valuable. The regional DOSAAF (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy) organization, which operated the airfield, sold the property to developers for the construction of a residential cottage settlement.
The site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The former airfield is now a residential area, specifically a cottage settlement or 'dacha' community. Satellite imagery and local maps show a grid of streets and private houses built directly over the former runway, taxiways, and apron. All aviation-related infrastructure, including hangars and the control point, has been demolished and removed. The land is no longer recognizable as an airfield.
Burtsevo was a significant general aviation and sport aviation airfield for the Nizhny Novgorod region. It was operated by the local DOSAAF flying club. Its primary functions included:
- **Initial Pilot Training:** It was a primary training ground for new pilots, often on aircraft like the Yakovlev Yak-52.
- **Parachute Jumping:** The airfield was the main center for sport parachuting and skydiving in the region. The Antonov An-2 was commonly used for parachute drops.
- **Sport Aviation:** It hosted activities related to aerobatics, gliding, and general sport flying.
For decades, it served as the hub for the Nizhny Novgorod United Technical School of DOSAAF, playing a key role in paramilitary sports and training civilians and future military personnel in basic aviation skills.
Effectively zero. The land has been irrevocably converted to residential use with extensive construction completed and a community now living on the site. There are no plans or possibilities to reopen Burtsevo as an airfield. The aviation activities, such as the parachute club, relocated to other nearby airfields like Bogorodsk (XUDG).
