Early 1990s (approximately 1992-1994)
The airport's closure was a direct result of the economic collapse following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The end of state subsidies for regional aviation, coupled with a sharp decline in passenger demand and soaring operational costs for fuel and maintenance, made the airport financially unsustainable and led to the cessation of all flights.
The airport is abandoned and non-operational. The paved runway, while still intact, is in a state of severe disrepair with significant cracking and vegetation growth, making it unusable for aviation. The site is known to be used for unsanctioned activities, including local street racing. The former terminal building and other airport infrastructure have been sold into private ownership and repurposed for non-aviation use. The airfield is completely defunct.
Danilkovo was a significant regional airport for local air lines (MVL - Местные воздушные линии) during the Soviet era. Opening in the early 1960s, it provided a vital transportation link for the industrial town of Vyazniki, connecting it to regional hubs such as Vladimir, Ivanovo, and Moscow (specifically Bykovo Airport, another regional hub). It handled both passenger and cargo flights, which were crucial before the full development of the modern road network. Operations were initially conducted using Antonov An-2 biplanes and were later upgraded to more modern Let L-410 Turbolet turboprop aircraft. The airport was operated by the 2nd Vladimir United Air Detachment of Aeroflot's Civil Aviation directorate.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Danilkovo Airport. The infrastructure has degraded to a point where a complete and costly reconstruction would be necessary. Given that the region is now adequately served by road and rail transport, there is no economic or logistical demand for the revival of local air services. The original reasons for its closure—lack of profitability and demand—remain valid, making any investment in its reopening highly unlikely.
