Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 1994

Reason for Closure

The airfield was closed as a direct result of the post-Soviet military downsizing and restructuring that occurred after the collapse of the USSR. The primary unit stationed at the base, the 23rd Fighter Aviation Regiment (23rd IAP), was disbanded in 1994. The closure was driven by economic reasons and the strategic re-evaluation of military assets by the newly formed Russian Federation.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and in an advanced state of decay. Satellite imagery and local reports confirm that the main runway, taxiways, and aircraft dispersal areas are still intact but are heavily cracked, weathered, and being reclaimed by nature. The numerous hardened aircraft shelters stand empty and derelict. The site is not used for any official purpose and has become a popular destination for urban explorers and photographers. There are reports of locals salvaging concrete slabs and other materials from the site. The core aviation infrastructure is non-functional and would require complete reconstruction to be usable.

Historical Significance

Kameno was a significant military airbase for the Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO), strategically located within the Moscow Air Defence District. Its primary mission was the air defense of Moscow and the surrounding industrial region. For most of its active history, it was the home base of the 23rd Fighter Aviation Regiment. This regiment was equipped with a series of advanced interceptor aircraft tasked with protecting Soviet airspace during the Cold War. The aircraft operated from Kameno included the Sukhoi Su-9 'Fishpot', Su-11 'Fishpot-C', Su-15 'Flagon', and finally the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23P 'Flogger-G'. The base, with its hardened aircraft shelters and extensive infrastructure, was a key component of the Soviet Union's formidable air defense network.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known official plans, discussions, or prospects for reopening Kameno Airport. The cost of restoring the heavily degraded infrastructure to modern operational standards would be prohibitive. Given the lack of a current strategic military need or a viable civilian economic case, its reactivation for either military or civil aviation is considered highly improbable.
