Early 1990s
Primarily economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The state-subsidized network of local air services (Mestnyye Vozdushnyye Linii - МВЛ) operated by Aeroflot was dismantled. Small, regional airfields like Vtorovo, which served low-density routes, became financially unsustainable without government funding and were subsequently abandoned.
The airport is completely abandoned and defunct. Satellite imagery of the coordinates reveals the faint, overgrown outline of a single unpaved (grass or dirt) runway. There is no remaining infrastructure on the site, such as a terminal, hangars, or air traffic control facilities. The land is derelict and appears to be unused.
Vtorovo was a typical small, local civil airfield active during the Soviet era. It was an integral part of the regional transportation network in the Vladimir Oblast. Its primary operations included:
- **Passenger Transport:** Connecting the local population of Vtorovo and surrounding villages with the regional administrative center, Vladimir, and other nearby towns. These routes were typically flown by Antonov An-2 aircraft.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** The airfield was heavily used for agricultural purposes ('Sel'khoz avatsiya'), with An-2 aircraft performing crop dusting and aerial application of fertilizers over the vast collective farms in the area.
- **Utility and Medical Services:** It also served as a base for air ambulance flights and other essential utility services, providing a vital link for remote communities before the development of modern road infrastructure.
There are no known official or private plans to reopen or redevelop Vtorovo Airport. The infrastructure is non-existent, and the economic model for such a small airfield is no longer viable. The transportation needs of the region are now fully met by road networks. The airport is considered permanently closed.
