The exact date is not officially documented, but the heliport is believed to have ceased operations in the early 1990s, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
The closure was primarily due to military restructuring and severe economic constraints after the collapse of the USSR. During this period, the Russian Armed Forces underwent significant downsizing, leading to the abandonment of numerous smaller, specialized military airfields and heliports as operations were consolidated at larger, more strategic bases.
The site is abandoned and no longer functions as an aviation facility. Satellite imagery shows the original layout with concrete hardstands and taxiways, but they are in a state of significant decay, cracked, and overgrown with vegetation. The heliport is located within the larger Seltsy military training ground, which remains an active training area for the VDV. The defunct heliport area is now simply an unused part of this larger military complex, potentially used for ground vehicle maneuvering or other non-aviation exercises.
Seltsy Heliport was an integral part of the Seltsy Training Center (Учебный центр Сельцы), the primary field training ground for the elite Ryazan Guards Higher Airborne Command School (РВВДКУ). This school is the main training institution for officers of the Russian Airborne Troops (VDV). The heliport was actively used for training VDV officer cadets in essential helicopter operations, including tactical landings, troop insertion and extraction drills, and parachute jumps from military helicopters, predominantly the Mil Mi-8. Its history is directly linked to the operational readiness and training of generations of Soviet and Russian airborne commanders.
There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening the Seltsy Heliport. The infrastructure is derelict and would require complete reconstruction. The modern Russian military's training and logistical needs are met by other active, consolidated airbases in the region, making the reactivation of this small, Cold War-era heliport highly unlikely.
