The airport was closed in the early 1990s, likely between 1991 and 1995. An exact date is not officially documented, but its closure coincided with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent disintegration of the state-funded regional air network.
The closure was primarily for economic reasons. Following the dissolution of the USSR, federal funding for subsidized local air services (known as 'Local Air Lines' or 'Местные воздушные линии') was eliminated. The state-run enterprises and collective farms that formed the economic backbone of remote villages like Kuzreka also collapsed, drastically reducing passenger and cargo demand. With no economic viability, Aeroflot's regional division ceased operations to these small, unprofitable airfields.
The site is completely abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery shows a single, unpaved runway that is heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and small trees. There are no visible airport buildings, markings, or infrastructure remaining. The land has reverted to nature and serves no formal purpose. It is a relic of a past era of Soviet regional aviation.
Kuzreka Airfield was a vital component of the local Soviet transportation network on the Kola Peninsula's Tersky Coast. It served as a lifeline for the remote village of Kuzreka, providing the primary means of connection to regional centers like Umba and Kirovsk. Operations were typically handled by Aeroflot's regional directorate using rugged aircraft suited for unpaved strips, such as the Antonov An-2 biplane for passengers and light cargo, and Mil Mi-8 helicopters for heavier loads and versatile transport. The airfield was essential for passenger travel, mail delivery, medical evacuations ('sanaviatsiya'), and supplying the village, especially during winter and the 'rasputitsa' (mud seasons) when ground travel was difficult or impossible.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Kuzreka Airfield. The village's population is very small, and the economic conditions that would support even a subsidized air service do not exist. The development of road infrastructure in the region, while still limited, has provided a more cost-effective alternative for transportation, making the revival of the airfield economically unfeasible and unnecessary.
