Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately early 1990s

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, state subsidies for the vast network of local air lines (MVL - Местные воздушные линии) were eliminated. The subsequent economic crisis, soaring fuel and maintenance costs, and a sharp decline in passenger demand made operations from small regional airfields like Mostovskoy financially unsustainable, leading to its closure along with hundreds of similar airports across Russia.

Current Status

The airfield is abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the location clearly shows the faint outline of a single, unpaved (grass/dirt) runway which is now heavily overgrown. The former airport grounds are partially repurposed. Some of the land has been developed for industrial or commercial use, with several large buildings constructed on the eastern portion of the site. The original airport buildings, if any remain, are in a state of decay or have been demolished. The runway area itself appears derelict and unused for any official aviation purposes.

Historical Significance

Mostovskoy Airfield was an active part of the Soviet Union's local civil aviation network. Its primary purpose was to connect the town of Mostovskoy and its surrounding rural district with the regional administrative center, Krasnodar. It primarily handled scheduled passenger flights and mail transport. The workhorse aircraft for these routes was almost certainly the Antonov An-2, a highly durable STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) biplane perfectly suited for operating from basic, often unpaved, airfields. The airport served as a vital transportation link for the community, significantly reducing travel time to the regional capital before the road network was substantially improved.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known official plans, government proposals, or credible prospects for the reopening of Mostovskoy Airfield. The infrastructure is completely derelict and would require a total reconstruction. Given the improved road infrastructure and the lack of economic viability for subsidized short-haul flights in the region, reopening the airport is considered highly unlikely.
