Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2008-2009

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons and land redevelopment. The airfield was operated by a DOSAAF (Volunteer Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation, and Navy) club, which faced financial difficulties after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The land, located in the prestigious and rapidly developing Istrinsky District of Moscow Oblast, became extremely valuable. The aviation club was eventually forced out, and the land was sold for commercial development.

Current Status

The airfield is permanently closed and defunct. Satellite imagery shows the runway and taxiways are still visible but are heavily overgrown, unmaintained, and unusable. A significant portion of the former airfield's territory, particularly the eastern side, has been redeveloped into a large industrial and logistics complex named 'PNK Park Novaya Riga'. The remaining original buildings, such as hangars and administrative offices, are derelict.

Historical Significance

Krasny Posyolok, also known as Istra Airfield, was a key sports aviation airfield for the Moscow region. It was the base for the Istra Aviation-Technical Sports Club (Истринский АТСК) of DOSAAF. Its primary operations included parachute jumping, for which it was well-known, utilizing iconic Antonov An-2 aircraft. It was also a major center for glider training, using PZL-104 Wilga aircraft to tow L-13 Blanik gliders. The airfield was a hub for general aviation enthusiasts and played a significant role in training pilots and parachutists for decades.

Reopening Prospects

Effectively zero. The extensive and permanent commercial development on the former airfield grounds makes any revival for aviation purposes impossible. The land has been irrevocably repurposed.
