The airport ceased regular operations in the late 1990s, with a final official closure following in the early 2000s. A precise date is not well-documented, but the cessation of services was a gradual process tied to the economic changes of the post-Soviet era.
The closure was due to economic reasons. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the extensive state-subsidized regional aviation network, operated by Aeroflot, collapsed. The new regional airlines that emerged could not profitably operate many local routes. A sharp decline in passenger demand, coupled with the high cost of fuel and the inability to fund the maintenance of the airport's aging infrastructure, made operations unsustainable.
The airport is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery and local reports confirm that the single runway, taxiways, and apron are severely degraded, cracked, and overgrown with vegetation. The former terminal building and other administrative structures are in a state of ruin, having been stripped of valuable materials over the years. The site is not maintained and has no official function. It is inaccessible for aviation and the land remains undeveloped.
Kansk Tsentralny was a standard Soviet-era regional airport designed to connect the significant industrial city of Kansk with the regional administrative center, Krasnoyarsk, and other smaller towns and villages within Krasnoyarsk Krai. It was a vital part of the local transportation network ('местные воздушные линии' - MVL), especially given the vast distances and sometimes challenging ground transport conditions in Siberia. The airport primarily handled small to medium propeller-driven aircraft, such as the Antonov An-2, Antonov An-24, and possibly the Let L-410 Turbolet, for passenger, mail, and light cargo services.
There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Kansk Tsentralny Airport. The cost to rebuild the infrastructure from its current derelict state would be prohibitively expensive. Furthermore, the city of Kansk is served by the large and active Kansk-Dalniy military air base (ICAO: UNKN) located to the southwest. If a need for civilian air travel to Kansk were to arise in the future, it is far more likely that a civilian terminal would be established at the existing military base (a common joint-use practice in Russia) rather than attempting to resurrect the old Tsentralny airport.
