Early 1990s
The airport's closure was a direct result of the widespread economic collapse following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The state-subsidized Soviet local air service (MVL - Местные воздушные линии), operated by Aeroflot, became economically unviable. With the end of subsidies, soaring fuel costs, and a sharp decline in passenger demand, thousands of small, regional airfields like Mordovo were abandoned across Russia as their operations were no longer profitable or necessary.
The airport is completely abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows a clearly visible, but heavily overgrown and deteriorated, former unpaved runway. The land appears to have reverted to a simple field, likely used for agriculture, grazing, or left fallow. Any associated infrastructure, such as a small terminal or service buildings, is either demolished, in a state of advanced decay, or has been repurposed for non-aviation use. The site is no longer recognizable as an active airfield.
Mordovo Airport was a typical Soviet-era regional airfield serving the Mordovsky District in the Tambov Oblast. Its primary function was to connect the local population with the regional capital, Tambov. Operations were mainly handled by rugged Antonov An-2 biplanes, which were perfectly suited for short, unpaved runways. The airport facilitated scheduled passenger flights on the Tambov-Mordovo route, providing essential transportation at a time when long-distance road infrastructure was less developed. Additionally, the airfield was a crucial base for agricultural aviation ('Aviahimraboty'), with An-2 aircraft used for crop dusting and aerial application of fertilizers over the surrounding collective farms ('kolkhozes'), which were vital to the region's agricultural economy.
There are no known plans or realistic prospects for reopening Mordovo Airport. The economic model that supported it no longer exists. The region is now adequately served by road and rail transport, eliminating the demand for short-haul air travel that once existed. The cost to restore the runway, rebuild infrastructure, and certify the airfield for modern use would be prohibitive and without any economic justification.
