Early 1990s
The airport ceased operations following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The primary cause was the severe economic crisis of the 1990s, which led to a sharp decline in demand for regional air travel, the loss of centralized state funding, and the breakup of the unified Aeroflot system. This made the operation of small local airports financially unsustainable.
The airport is completely abandoned and in a state of disrepair. The asphalt runway, while still visible from satellite imagery, is cracked, weathered, and overgrown in places. The former terminal and service buildings are dilapidated and in ruins. The site is not used for any official aviation purposes. Local reports and visual evidence suggest the abandoned runway is informally used by local residents for driving practice, car club meetups, and unauthorized drag racing.
Pervomayskiy was a typical small regional airport for Soviet Local Air Lines (МВЛ - Местные воздушные линии). Its main purpose was to provide passenger and mail connectivity for the industrial town of Pervomayskiy, which was a significant center for the peat industry, with the regional capital, Ryazan, and potentially other nearby towns. Operations were primarily conducted using light utility aircraft, most notably the Antonov An-2 biplane, a workhorse of Soviet regional aviation. The airport also likely supported agricultural aviation (e.g., crop dusting) for the surrounding collective farms and may have been used for medical transport flights.
There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The original economic justification for its existence no longer applies, and the region's transportation needs are met by road and rail. The infrastructure is severely degraded and would require a complete and costly reconstruction, for which there is no current economic driver, demand, or funding.
