Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Early 1990s. The exact date is not well-documented, but the airport ceased operations following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with most similar small regional airports closing between 1991 and 1994.

Reason for Closure

Primarily economic reasons. The airport was part of the extensive Soviet network of local air lines (MVL - Местные воздушные линии), which was heavily subsidized by the state. After the collapse of the USSR, these subsidies vanished. The new economic reality made such small-scale, low-traffic routes financially unsustainable. A sharp increase in ticket prices led to a collapse in passenger demand, and the regional Aeroflot division, which operated the flights, could no longer afford to maintain the service or the infrastructure.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and derelict. Satellite imagery shows a faint outline of the former unpaved runway, which is now heavily overgrown with grass, shrubs, and young trees. Any terminal or service buildings that existed have either been demolished or have fallen into complete ruin. The site is not used for any official purpose and is being reclaimed by nature. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure.

Historical Significance

Yuryevets Airport was a typical small regional airfield of the Soviet era. Its primary function was to connect the town of Yuryevets with the regional administrative center, Ivanovo. Operations were vital for providing reliable and rapid transportation for passengers, mail, and light cargo, especially when road conditions could be poor. The flights were typically operated by small, robust aircraft like the Antonov An-2. For many residents of this relatively remote town on the Volga River, the airport was an essential link to the rest of the region.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or credible prospects for reopening Yuryevets Airport. The infrastructure is non-existent, and the economic case for re-establishing air service to a town of this size is extremely weak, especially given the improvements in road transportation since the 1990s. The cost to rebuild the runway, terminal, and support facilities would be prohibitive with no clear return on investment.
