Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The airport ceased scheduled passenger operations in the early 1990s, likely around 1993-1994. It was officially and legally closed, then removed from the state register of civil airfields of the Russian Federation in 2005.

Reason for Closure

The closure was primarily due to economic reasons following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The centrally planned and heavily subsidized regional air transport system operated by Aeroflot became financially unviable in the new market economy. This led to a sharp decline in passenger demand, a lack of funding for maintenance and fuel, and the eventual collapse of most small regional air routes across Russia.

Current Status

The airport is completely abandoned and in a state of severe decay. The single asphalt runway is cracked, weathered, and heavily overgrown with grass and weeds. The small terminal building, control tower, and other auxiliary structures are derelict, with broken windows and signs of vandalism. The site is not maintained or secured and is sometimes used unofficially by local residents for activities such as driving practice, drag racing, or as a walking area. It serves as a relic of the Soviet transportation system.

Historical Significance

Kasimov Airport was a typical small regional airport of the Soviet era. Its primary function was to connect the industrial town of Kasimov with the regional capital, Ryazan (Turlatovo Airport), and with Moscow (likely Bykovo Airport, which handled regional traffic). Operations were managed by the local division of Aeroflot. The airport primarily handled passenger, mail, and light cargo flights. The aircraft most commonly used on these routes were the Antonov An-2 biplane and, in later years, the Let L-410 Turbolet, a 19-seat turboprop. The airport was a vital link in the local transportation network, providing a faster alternative to ground transport for official, business, and personal travel.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known official plans or credible prospects for reopening Kasimov Airport. The cost of rebuilding the runway, terminal, and navigation infrastructure would be substantial and is not economically justified. The population of Kasimov and the surrounding area is not large enough to support scheduled air traffic, especially with improved road connections to Ryazan and Moscow. The airport is considered permanently closed.
